Tour highlights.
The walk begins at the central park of Vilcabamba and heads eastward out of town towards the high ridges of the Podocarpus, crossing the river Chamba, and proceeding uphill through Yamburara Bajo. This is a paved road and passes hotels and hostels, stores and lots of neighborhood activity before reaching the book exchange and then turning off the pavement onto a dirt road. The dirt road leads to Yamburara Alto, a more sparsely settled barrio of Vilcabamba. The road gently ascends and we pass a sugar cane processing facility, an adobe brick factory, and some amazing towering earth formations.
There are panoramic views of the canyon and valley below. The road comes to the Yambala river, one of the primary sources of drinking water for the village of Vilcabamba, and continues onward to pass the main entrance to Podocarpus National Park.
The walk goes through dense forest beside the wild river Yambala to reach the first waterfall at Guabo Playa, where bathing is a pleasant optional choice on a hot day. Here, we cross the river and begin an ascent through a lush garden and then on to a dry forest above where we reach an outlook at 2000 meters with incredible views of the valley below.
We return by following along the ridge back to the river Yambala before coming to the main road that brings us back to town.
