We approach Mandango from the face nearest the village of Vilcabamba. From this entrance to Mandango, the ascent follows a good, moderately inclined path through a section of dry forest providing breath-taking views of the Vicabamba valley.
The path emerges from the forest and continues up a more steep incline to the first cross. Here we pause to enjoy a magnificent 360 degree view of the valley of Vilcabamba and the surrounding mountain ridges. Leaving this vantage point, we climb through a challenging section along the steep-walled flank of the summit to reach a narrow ridge leading to the second cross at the summit of Mandango, the mountain of power.
Departing the summit, we continue along a narrow ridge, through a challenging section, descending through an active cattle ranch, and follow a stream back to the center of Vilcabamba.
